Jane leaves lingering aftereffects, stitcher forced to seek solace elsewhere...

Have you ever finished a stitching project that you loved?  Have you ever felt lost and abandoned when you finished that lovely project?  Well, Jane has abandoned me.  Or rather, I've abandoned her since I put the last stitches into her.  She's patiently waiting until I can take her in for framing.  And now, I feel so lost without her.    What to do?

Well, after some debating, I decided to turn to something I've been obsessing over for a while.  Sorry, stitchers, but I think I'm going to be quilting for at least a while.  Until I find that next stitching project that calls to me.  Here's what I've been working on.

I know you quilters out there have been seeing these clamshell quilts popping up all over the place.  Well, they got to me.  I started obsessing.  Then Linen and Raspberry showed off her version and it just knocked my socks off.  Scroll down on that link and you'll see what she's done.  Gorgeous!  She later posted a link to Brigitte Giblin's new website with the clamshell quilt pattern that she was using.  And so I bought it!   I didn't think I'd do anything with it for a long time, but I guess I was wrong about that.

I will proceed to bore you with shots of the whole length of the quilt so far.

I'm using mostly Rowan fabrics -- Kaffe Fassett, Philip Jacobs, and Brandon Mably.  I'm just loving the colors!

I was afraid the large scale prints wouldn't work well, but so far it's been just fine.  I think!  I have no clue how to get a shot of the whole thing though.

So Laurie, Deb, and Kim, I hate to say it, but hand applique is still my first love.  That and English paper piecing.   The Farmer's Wife blocks are still languishing.  Ah well.....   And Lizzie, I love hand applique, but I still can't face tons of complicated applique!  This is easy compared to the Civil War Bride Quilt.   I'm lazy.  lol!

Both kids went out to see the local fireworks with their own sets of friends.  Nice that they do that since the father type and I are content to sit at home and watch the Macy's fireworks and the Capitol 4th on TV.  Such stick in the muds we are!  It's really feeling like summer now.  Wimbledon is done for another year (congrats to Rafa -- I'm not at all surprised he won.).  Time to settle in for a long summer.  Why do I feel like I'm ready for fall already?  lol!

Thanks as always for stopping by and saying hi.  It's wonderful to be a part of this lovely blogging community!  Have a great week!  Hope you have today off and get to have a good stitchy day!

Aw darned it Margaret, why did you go and do that! LOL I've been obsessing over those danged clamshells and want to do them, but just how many projects can a girl have at one time. Hmmmmm, maybe one more! Love all those fabrics you're using - it's going to be a wonderful quilt.

And hear you on the stitching front - I'm spinning my head over what to stitch next. Seems that all I dream about lately is quilting. I'm sure that some design will call to you soon, but in the meantime, I look forward to seeing more clamshells.

The clam shell quilt is wonderful. It is surely going to be a beautiful with all of your fabric choices. People will love it and in years to come others will know for sure that color did not scare you.
I total understand what you mean with that lost feeling after finishing a stitching project. I worked on and off for 2 years on the Hannah Prescott sampler. (I have a pic posted on my blog.) I even made a special needle roll to house the threads. I took her everywhere...work,doctor's appt., hospital's when my family was sick, I even took her to Gettysburg for a conference. When I finally finished it I had a feeling of emptyness because I wouldn't be able to take her with me anymore. It was really strange when I left her with the framer. It was a sense that I was leaving a child and I don't even have kids. The intensity of the loss soon left when I got her back from the framer. I gave her a place to live on the wall at the landing of my stairwell leading upstairs. I did this so I would see her every time I went up and down the stairs so I could enjoy her being there like an old friend.
My only advice is to put your Jane in a special place so you can visit multiple times daily. Hope it helps.

Margaret, the clam shell quilt is going to be wonderful! Your inspiration quilt is gorgeous too, I can see why you're drawn to it.

I'm ready for autumn too. The long hot days of summer just don't appeal to me anymore.

Margaret, I am woefully behind in my blog reading and have been trying to catch up. I read your past few posts and boy, did I miss a lot! Jane is absolutely gorgeous! Congradulations on such a beautiful finish. She is quite beguiling and I cannot wait to see her framed!

I look forward to your clamshell quilt progress. I have wanted to dabble in quilting for some time now and I hope to get a sewing corner established soon. Keeping up with your progress will certainly help me get things moving! I love the colors that you have chosen for your quilt and I cannot wait to see more!

Happy Stitching!

Hi Margaret, I have never seen clamshell quilts and I think it looks so gorgeous! I will have to tell my Mom about it (she is a quilter too). I am going to get off this computer soon and go spend the day watching TV with husband while I stitch!!!!

Oh WOW Margaret - gorgeous - just gorgeous - I can imagine you do need a big change after Jane - she is certainly a beautful girl. Have fun with your quilting adventures and when "another" exciting girl catches your eye - you'll be off and running with a new and exciting sampler! Until then - ENJOY! Mel

The clamsheels are adorable, and I too like the Kaffe Fasset, Phillip Jacobs Brandon whatever line of fabrics.

I actually bought the pattern and the pattern pack of fabric for th Civil War Bride Quilt. Then I hunted around and found the backing the first of the year. Now all I need is time. Hummm...

And lots of needlework projects and classes. Hummm....

I need to focus I do believe! You are really good at focusing, Margaret.

Lovely beginnings of your quilt! Someday I will jump on the quilt-wagon and learn that craft. Someday, when I have a full time job and a place of my very own, lol! In the meantime, I will just sit and drool over the one's you and others do on the blogs.

Thanks for sharing!

Oh my, I just love your clamshells - too cute and the colors are wonderful and summery. One day, one day I will learn to quilt until then, my time is spent between homework and cross stitching. Can't wait to see more of this lovely quilt.

Enjoy your week.

Oh my goodness, Margaret, that quilt is going to look wonderful. I've never seen anything like it, but then I haven't paid much attention to quilts for many years! It's nice to do something new and different! I will look forward to seeing more!

Happy summering!

Wow! Really neat quilt. I love and applique too, but I like things to go faster that that, so I usually resort to the machine. LOL

Can't wait to see the finished product, and see what your stitching basket will hold next.
Hugs.

Woo hoo...the clamshell quilt top looks marvelous Margaret. I'm so glad you've found just the right quilting project to keep you interested. That's ok about the FW quilt blocks... you'll get to it when you're ready.
OK.. are you using muslin clamshells for the alternate rows?

Yay!!!! Love those Margaret, I know what you mean about the applique on the Civil War quilt, you're talking to the woman that opted out after half the blocks, smaller quilt - quicker finish! It works for me at the moment.

Love the quilt. It's the repeating pattern with all those different fabrics that is so wonderful. I'm going to have to read your entry again to see how you are doing this.

Jane is stunning. You will love hanging her on the wall. What a commanding presence.
Hope you are having a great summer.
